Auxiliary Police Unit
The Cheltenham Township Volunteer Auxiliary Police Unit upholds a proud tradition of public service to the Township of Cheltenham and its residents. Each year, over 30 Auxiliary Police volunteers dedicate hundreds of hours toward supporting the Cheltenham Police Department.  Since its formation in the mid-1950's, the organization has assisted the Police Department with traffic and crowd control at fires, auto accidents, parades, community events and other emergencies

By handling these responsibilities, auxiliary officers free Cheltenham police for regular patrol duties.  Like the Township's other emergency services, auxiliary police are available 24 hours a day.

In addition, Auxiliary Police help ensure Township and community events run smoothly. For example, every year Auxiliary Police direct traffic and parking for recreation programs like the Community Harvest Festival and Sundays in the Park. In addition, Auxiliary Police patrol the Township as extra eyes and ears on Halloween and Mischief Night.  Patrols can report suspicious activity immediately to the police via portable police radios.

Auxiliary Police officers are equipped with uniforms similar to those worn by regular officers. Though not armed, they are authorized to use police vehicles and police band radio communications equipment when appropriate.

The unit generally meets monthly at the Police Administration Building where they receive training in many of the same police subjects and skills as regular officers. Police Department in-house officer instructors provide most of this training, supplemented by outside sources as appropriate.

New AUXILIARY POLICE OFFICERS are needed now to help maintain our commitment of service. The dedicated men and women of this all-volunteer organization are uniformed and equipped by the Township Board of Commissioners. Requirements for membership include having attained 18 years of age and being a resident, for at least six months, of Cheltenham Township or any of these other Montgomery County Townships or Boroughs: Abington, Ambler, Bryn Athyn, Hatboro, Horsham, Jenkintown, Lower Gwynedd, Lower Moreland, Plymouth, Rockledge, Springfield, Upper Dublin, Upper Moreland, Whitemarsh, Whitpain.

The Cheltenham Township Auxiliary Police Unit maintains a continuous commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism in volunteer public service where there is a feeling of friendly teamwork and cooperation.  Becoming a member of the Auxiliary Police offers you an important opportunity to serve your community. We are happy to meet and talk with people who wish to join our group.
