Work on Stage 1 to be completed October 18; Stage 4 work (Church Road between Old York Road and the Old York Road Spur) to begin October 17. New traffic patterns to occur.
Streetscape Project Begins Next Work Stage
New Traffic Patterns and Restrictions will be in Effect  (10/16/2019)

Contractors are planning to wrap up work on Stage 1 of the Elkins Park Streetscape Project (north side of Church Road between Stahr Road and Old York Road (Route 611) by the end of this week and start moving to Stage 4 this Thursday (10/17). Stage 4 includes work on the north side of Church Road between Old York Road and the Old York Road Spur.

Stage 4 work involves the removal of the right jughandle from southbound Old York Road onto westbound Church Road. Right turns will continue to be permitted at this intersection during after construction for vehicles, except trucks. Trucks will be required to utilize the Old York Road Spur to access Church Road from Old York Road.

Construction on the streetscape project will wrap for the winter when Stage 4 is complete in mid- to late-November. Stages 2 and 3 will commence in mid- to late-March 2020, weather dependent.

Motorists will encounter flagging operations on Church Road between Stahr Road and Route 611 (Old York Road)  Tuesday, September 3, through mid-October from 9:00 3:00 p.m. for sidewalk and drainage construction, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today. Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area because backups and delays will occur. The schedule is weather dependent. Stay tuned for updates on the construction schedule, location of work and any lane closures or travel restrictions.

About the Project:
Improvements will include pedestrian improvements such as new curbs and sidewalks, crosswalks, ADA ramps, pedestrian signals, pedestrian-scale street lights, and a landscaped plaza, as well as transportation improvements such as new traffic signals, improved ingress/egress and circulation patterns. This construction project is being funded in part by a $1,875,000 grant through the Federal Highway Administration's Transportation Alternatives Program, administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

This project is the realization of parts of two planning efforts regarding the Elkins Park West Commercial District:

Similar improvements have been completed, in multiple stages, in Glenside as a result of the 2000 Glenside Commercial District Enhancement Plan.
