During five Sundays in the Spring and Fall,
Tookany Creek Parkway is closed to motor vehicles - weather permitting - so that
cyclists, in-line skaters, joggers, walkers and others can enjoy the roadway
free from traffic. Vehicles are diverted from Tookany Creek Parkway between
Central Avenue and Jenkintown Road from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Through traffic is
allowed on Beryl Road. Cheltenham Township's Auxiliary Police, a volunteer group
trained in traffic and crowd control, supervises the street closings.

Fitness Boot Camp 2009
Fitness buffs can challenge their normal workout routine with
this multi-faceted program of exercise and nutrition, featuring an ever-changing
series of outdoor cardio, strength, circuit training and flexibility exercises.
The program runs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00
a.m. from June 22 to August 21, 2009 [no sessions
August 10 & 12] at Wall Park, 1 Wall Park Drive in Elkins Park.
All participants must attend an assessment prior to the start of camp by
appointment at registration.
2009 Fees:
$160 for returning participants who are Cheltenham Township residents
$175 for new participants who are Cheltenham Township residents
$185
for returning participants who are NOT Cheltenham Township residents
$200 for new participants who are NOT Cheltenham Township residents
Limit 30 participants
Registration is available weekdays from thru June 12, 2009, from 9:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00
p.m. at
the Rowland Community Center,
at Myrtle and Elm Avenues in Cheltenham, and the LaMott Community Center, Willow
and Sycamore Avenues in LaMott.
Pony Share 2009
A summer five day pony grooming, riding and horsemanship program introduces
children ages 3 and over to the wonderful world of equines. Pony-Share uses
ponies and cobs, which are smaller and easier to handle than larger counter
parts and small group working under qualified instructors to teach horsemanship
matters in a fun-filled, non-threatening atmosphere. Participants, who will
briefly ride or drive their charges during each class, must wear strong hiking
shoes, jeans or sweatpants and a bicycle helmet. Sessions will be offered at
Curtis Arboretum, located at Church Road and Greenwood Avenue in Wyncote. This
year we are offering the Petite Equestrian Program (PEP) a standard 1 hour
program for ages 3 to 6, and the Pony Grooming & Riding Program (PGRP) a
standard 1.5 hour for ages 7 to 11. The fees are as following:

2009 Halloween Parties
Goblins of all ages can expect lots of
spooky fun at the Rowland Community Center (Myrtle & Elms Avenues in Cheltenham)
on Friday, October 23 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. or the LaMott Community Center
(Willow and Sycamore
Avenues in LaMott) on Saturday, October 31 from 6:00
p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Admission is $3 per person. Hayride and Bonfire
Welcome the onset of chilly weather by
enjoying a hayride down to a bonfire to listen to music or sing along on Friday,
November 6, 2009, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. This event in beautiful Curtis
Arboretum, located at Church Road and Greenwood Avenue in Wyncote, costs $3 per
person, but children under age 4 are free. Hot chocolate, cider and other light
refreshments are included.
Winter Swim
2010
Cheltenham Township
residents may enjoy evening recreational swims
at the Cheltenham High School pool two nights a week during the winter/spring
season beginning Wednesday, January 6, 2010.
The pool,
located at Rices Mill Road and Carlton Avenue in Wyncote, will be open on
Wednesdays from 7:45 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. and Fridays from 7:00 p.m. to 9:45 p.m.
Daily fees are $3 for adults or $2 for
youths under age 18, college students up to age 23 and seniors age 62 and over.
Seasonal tags may be purchased at the pool for $25 for adults or $15 for youths,
college students or seniors. Swimmers must supply their own towels, caps and
bathing suits. Lockers are available, but participants must supply their own
locks. The township is not responsible for personal items in the locker room.
Children’s instructional swim lessons are
also available at the pool on Saturdays beginning February 27 for a $25 fee per
child for an eight-week program. Registration will be held on Saturday, January
16 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the LaMott Community Center, located at
Willow and Sycamore Avenues in LaMott, and the Rowland Community Center, located
at Myrtle and Elm Avenues in Cheltenham.
Combo Workout 2010
A workout for every fitness level combining cardio,
strength and flexibility that includes circuit training Plyometrics, step, Bosu,
Bodyblade, kickboxing, Pilates and more.
The program runs from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. on Mondays and
Wednesdays from February 1 to April 7 [no class 4/5] OR Tuesdays and Fridays from
February 2 to April 9, 2010 [no class 4/2] at
the LaMott Community Center (Willow
and Sycamore Avenues in LaMott). Fee is $85 for residents and $130 for
non-residents.
March Madness
2010
You think you’ve got game? Prove it at the 11th
Annual March Madness One-on-One Basketball Tournament at the LaMott Community
Center, located at Willow and Sycamore Avenues in LaMott. Players ages 10 to 16
can test their skills in the single elimination tournament in March.
Registration for the tournament starts on Saturday, January 16 and ends February
13, 2010. Registration is free, but participants must be community center members in good
standing. For more information, contact the LaMott Community Center at

Government Day 2010
Cheltenham Township invites area students
ages 6 to 14 to learn about municipal operations on Friday, February 12, 2010.
Participants will tour police, ambulance and public works facilities as well as
district courts and administrative offices to get a first-hand look at local
government. The
experience ends with lunch at Glenside Hall with members of the LaMott and
Rowland Seniors Clubs.
Family Bingo 2010
Cheltenham residents can enjoy family-oriented bingo followed by tasty
refreshments at the Rowland Community Center on three Fridays this winter
starting at 7:00 p.m. On January 22 features hot chocolate and cookies; February 26,
ice cream social and March 26,
soft pretzels and jouice. Admission is $3 per person. Children under age 14 must be
accompanied by an adult. The Rowland Community Center is located at Myrtle and
Elm Avenues in Cheltenham. For more information on the event, which is
sponsored by the Cheltenham Township Parks and Recreation Department, call

Talent Show & Auditions 2010
Cheltenham
Township children and teens ages 5 to 17 can get their chance in the spotlight
during the township’s Talent Search 2010. Auditions will be scheduled by
appointment only beginning February 1 at the LaMott Community Center, located
at Willow and Sycamore Avenues in LaMott. A $10 performance fee is due at the
audition but will be refunded after the performance.
Winners will earn cash prizes of $50 for
first place, $40 for second and $30 for third.
The show will be held on
Friday, April 16, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at Glenside Hall, located at Keswick Avenue and
Waverly Road in Glenside. Only Cheltenham Township residents are eligible to compete.
Admission is $3. For more

Arbor Day 2010
Cheltenham Township will commemorate its 22nd
Annual Arbor Day Celebration on Friday, April 30 in Robinson Park on
Greenwood Avenue and North Bent Road, Wyncote.
From 10:00 a.m. to 11:00
a.m., children from area schools will sing songs and recite poetry about the
benefits trees provide, and a tree will be planted in the park. In
addition, the Township expects to receive a 12th consecutive Tree City USA Award
and 11th consecutive Growth Award from the National Arbor Day Foundation for its
continued progress in community forestry activities. Representatives from
the Montgomery County Cooperative Extension Urban Forestry Program will make the
award presentations.
Fishing Derby 2010
On Saturday, June 5, 2010, children can test their skill
and luck at the 53rd Annual Fishing Derby at Kleinheinz Pond on Tookany Creek
Parkway between Central Avenue and Beryl Road in Cheltenham. The derby, which is
open to boys and girls up to age 15, will run from 9:00 a.m. to noon. A $2 entrance fee entitles participants to the use of a pole and line, one hot dog,
one soda and a chance to win great prizes. Participants must bring their own
bait. Children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult. The fishing
derby is presented by the Cheltenham/Rockledge Rotary Club in cooperation with
the Cheltenham Township Parks and Recreation Department. |
